Staying on Top of Your New Year’s Resolutions

Have you ever wondered why New Year’s Resolutions fade out after just a few weeks? The reason why we so often fail at our fad diet attempts is because they are simply not sustainable. You might attempt a quick fix – remove your favourite foods, restrict calories, or eat bland foods – the end result leaves you feeling hungry and depressed and you quickly fall back into your old ways. At the end of the day, it’s about a long term lifestyle change, not a short term diet.

One of the best investments you will make in a lifetime is the investment in yourself. So, how do you fuel your body for maximum results? Eat less from a box and more from the earth. It’s important to recognize that whatever you put inside your body is showing up on the outside. As a Holistic Nutritionist, I am witness to how just small changes can result in amazing transformations in people. I will also say that eating healthy does not need to be complicated, but it does need to be intentional.

Friends…healthy eating doesn’t mean salads all day, everyday. It can, and should be delicious, simple ingredients that you love! Healthy foods are flavourful and tasty! Slowly start incorporating nutrient dense foods into your day – avocados, healthy omega-3 fats, such as wild salmon, nuts and seeds, quinoa, lentils, organic vegetables, grass fed meats, nut butters, or try your own homemade energy bites, using whole ingredients. You will soon start to notice, as you begin to incorporate healthier foods, the desire for sugary treats will diminish.

Next up, education. When reading nutrition labels, it’s always good to watch out for hidden ingredients. We need to be cautious in recognizing label claims for the health benefits in processed foods. It can be deceiving when the food giants sprinkle in small amounts of healthy ingredients of poor quality, high calorie, nutrient void foods, giving us the illusion that we are doing something really beneficial for ourselves. Real food doesn’t need an ingredient label and it doesn’t make any claims. Let’s pay the farmer, not the pharmacist. Read up!

Folks, hydration is where it’s at…drink your water! 70% of our body is made of water. Blood, urine, lymph fluid, sweat – your cells need to be hydrated to stay healthy or they will shrivel up. Every healing process that happens inside our bodies, happens with water. Water hydration apps are now available on your smartphone to gently remind you of when you should be drinking. Drink up!
